About Banner Thunderbird Medical Center
Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is an 890,000-square-foot acute-care facility with 200 beds in Glendale, Arizona. It’s a Level I adult trauma center to provide local residents with life-saving treatment. They also offer behavioral and mental health treatment as either inpatient or outpatient care.
In their specialized program for mental and behavioral health, they offer 44 adult beds and12 pediatric beds for patients aged 5-12 or 18 and up. At this level of care, patients can get crisis assessments, psychiatric stabilization, detox, and more. Your care team will tailor a treatment plan that will best support your wellbeing. Assessments can be accessed through the emergency department. The focus of this program will be discharge planning and may include individual and group therapy sessions.
Banner Thunderbird Medical Center’s department of behavioral health also runs intensive outpatient programs for teens and adults. Clients can have a free assessment by calling their hotline. For adults, intensive outpatient care (IOP) can help with depression, PTSD, anxiety disorders and substance use disorders. The IOP for chemical dependency is a structured program that is based on the 12 Step model of recovery. Clients will join 12 Step meetings and get a sponsor. I like that there are weekly family days to encourage your loved ones to be involved in your treatment.
They offer a unique postpartum and anxiety IOP. There is also another group for teens aged 13-17 and one for adults in the LGBTQIA+ community. Group sessions are a safe and therapeutic space where clients can develop skills specific to their needs and build coping skills.
The center has its own cafe that provides hot and cold meals. There’s also a gift shop. Should you be able to go outside for recreation, there’s the nearby Thunderbird Quail Run and Sunset Palms Park.

Levels of Care
- 1
Detox Treatment
The process of detox in Arizona may sound intimidating, but it’s a vital first step to recovery. A detox may be uncomfortable, but most programs monitor you and provide treatment for withdrawal symptoms. In the end, you’ll be able to start your new life substance-free.
- 2
Inpatient Rehab
Inpatient treatment in Arizona gives you the best opportunity to spend focused time creating the new habits you need to break free from substance use. Building a new life for yourself is challenging, and the focused, uninterrupted treatment you receive during inpatient care can help you lay that foundation.
- 3
Outpatient Rehab
For those who are more medically stable or have finished an inpatient program, outpatient treatment in Arizona can be a useful form of rehab. Some of the elements of outpatient treatment include individual and group counseling, skill-building, relapse prevention, and help with essentials like employment and housing.
- 4
Aftercare Support
A key component of preventing relapse after treatment in Arizona is to have ongoing care, also known as aftercare. Aftercare may include ongoing counseling, additional life-skills training, peer support, and recovery support groups.
Therapies
Cognitive Behavior Therapy
When you’re struggling with addiction in Arizona, your actions and thoughts may not be rational. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help you challenge your thoughts and adjust your actions accordingly. Learning which thought distortions you are most susceptible to can help you challenge unhelpful thoughts, create better interpretations of situations, and choose healthier responses.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
When you’re struggling with addiction in Arizona, stressful situations can be a trigger. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) allows you to learn new coping strategies and build your confidence so you can make healthier decisions. Learning to develop a healthier mindset through stress management skills gives you the ability to create better circumstances in your life, and choose healthier responses to challenges.
Experiential Therapy
Many people benefit from experiential therapy in Arizona because they are able to express their emotions and work through trauma in non-traditional ways. During treatment, you may take part in art projects, musical expression, or physical challenges like an obstacle course. These allow you to process emotions in a non-traditional way.
Family Therapy
One way to address the family conflict and challenging relationships that may impact your substance use is during family therapy in Arizona. Family therapy can mean addressing uncomfortable and challenging issues, but having a professional therapist facilitating the sessions makes it easier for everyone to share honestly and improve their relationships.
Group Therapy
One way to share your feelings and get feedback during rehab in Arizona is during group therapy. Some of the topics covered in group therapy include overcoming shame and guilt, improving communication, developing healthy coping skills, and building a support network.
Individual Therapy
It’s easy to feel isolated when you battle substance use, but individual therapy in Arizona can give you a professional ally in overcoming the roots of addiction. Individual therapy sessions generally last 60 minutes and may include discussing a specific issue, education about specific topics, or developing life skills.
Trauma Therapy
Sometimes addiction is a way to self-medicate and avoid how you feel about past traumatic events. Trauma-informed therapy in Arizona can help you address these feelings and build a better life. Trauma-informed therapy is a normal part of evidence-based treatment programs and may be a part of inpatient treatment, outpatient care, or both. Methods include sharing of experiences, peer support, mindfulness practices, and more.
