The Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program, known as VASAP, provides more than 20 programs to improve highway safety including educating drivers on the dangers of driving when intoxicated and helping them create a foundation for long-term recovery. Their Marion location offers services that focus on reducing impaired driving.

Their intensive education program is 10 hours of learning over five weeks. It helps clients understand how substance abuse relates to highway safety and health. Over the course of this program, participants will learn the tools they need to change their behaviors and be safe on the road.

They also run a less intensive program that lasts four weeks and includes eight hours of treatment. This program can go hand-in-hand with individual counseling provided by other community agencies or providers. They can help you connect to those resources if needed.

I like that they have a young offenders program. This is for young people who have an alcohol-related offense like underage possession of alcohol. Teens that participate in this course could have a reduced charge or even have their charge dismissed completely.

VASAP is one of only a few organizations that also provide ignition interlock services. When offenders are convicted of driving under the influence, they are often required to have an ignition interlock on their vehicle. This device takes their blood alcohol level and won’t start the car unless the driver is alcohol-free. The device comes with a built-in camera and prevents attempts at tampering or tricking the device. VASAP monitors interlock requirements for the DMV and Virginia courts.
